The Private Enterprise & the Law JD concentration: make a real impact where it matters most.

Small and medium enterprises, family businesses, and Indigenous economic development are the backbone of Manitoba’s and Canada’s economy. Lawyers who serve these organizations need more than theory—they need practical skills, cultural awareness, and business insight. This Concentration is designed to prepare students for practice in support of such enterprises. Students will develop the legal expertise, cultural understanding, and practical skills required to advise these organizations and their stakeholders as they navigate complex challenges and opportunities in Manitoba, across the Prairies, and beyond. 

The courses listed below cover a broad range of issues relevant to today’s clients, including Indigenous clients. Developing a strong foundation in these areas will equip students with the knowledge and skills to address complex client challenges while also strengthening career opportunities and pathways to success in legal practice.

Requirements

Students must take one course (equivalent to three credit hours) from the list below:

LAW 3030 Independent Research Paper (Private Enterprise and the Law topic)

LAW 3282 Indigenous Peoples, Oral History and the Law

LAW 3278 Indigenous Economic Development and the Law

LAW 3310 Aboriginal Peoples and the Law

Students must take any four courses (equivalent to 12 credit hours) from the list below:
