Dr. Bruce Curran

Dr. Bruce Curran

Workplace Law and Negotiation

Professor Curran focuses on empirical research in labour and employment law, as well as dispute resolution. In his work, he applies interdisciplinary methods to examine workplace dynamics and negotiation practices.

His academic background is broad and interdisciplinary. He earned a Bachelor of Laws from Western University and a Master of Industrial Relations from the University of Toronto. In addition, he holds a Master of Laws in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Osgoode Hall Law School. A PhD from the University of Toronto, completed at the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources, further strengthened his emphasis on rigorous empirical methodology.

Dr. Katie Szilagyi

Dr. Katie Szilagyi

AI Law and Technology

Dr. Szilagyi joined the Faculty of Law as an Assistant Professor in 2021 and contributes to the Desautels Accelerator through her research in AI law and technology. With a technical foundation, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Biosystems Engineering from the University of Manitoba.

She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa, completing joint specializations in Law and Technology and International Law. Following her JD, she clerked at the Federal Court of Appeal in Ottawa and later practiced commercial litigation at a large national firm in Toronto.

Her advanced studies include an LLM in Law and Technology from Tel Aviv University and doctoral research at the University of Ottawa. During this time, her work was supported by the SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship, and the uOttawa Excellence Award. She was also selected as a 2019 Global Fellow of the Institute of Technology and Society in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Her research is innovative and interdisciplinary.  She has published and presented on blockchain technology and the international humanitarian law implications of autonomous weapons systems.

Dr. Opeyemi Bello

Dr. Opeyemi Bello

Desautels Assistant Professor in Private Law

Dr. Bello joined the University of Manitoba in September 2024 as a Desautels Scholar in a teaching capacity. In this role,his teaching focuses on commercial law, contract and labour-management relations, corporate law, and professional responsibility.

Although his appointment does not include formal research responsibilities, he continues to research, publish, and present scholarship in business law. In particular, his work focuses on tax law. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba, he was the prestigious Purdy Crawford Scholar at the Dalhousie University Faculty of Law.

His academic credentials include an LLB (equivalent to a JD) from the University of Ilorin, an LLM and MBA with a Finance specialization from the University of Lagos, and a PhD in International Taxation Law and Policy from the Schulich Law School at Dalhousie University.

Darcy MacPherson

Darcy MacPherson

Research Director

Professor MacPherson joined the Faculty of Law in July 2002 and serves as Research Director for the Desautels Centre. As Research Director, he holds a renewable decanal appointment as a tenured professor with a research agenda related to business law.

The role operates independently from the programs and research initiatives of the Desautels Business Law Accelerator. As part of this appointment, the position includes a course release and a modest stipend in recognition of scholarly contributions. The Research Director is also expected to contribute original research to The Review of Trade and Enterprise Law and to acknowledge support from the Desautels Centre in all related publications.
