The Desautels Research Lecture Series and the Rod Senft Lecture in Family Business Law series provided a platform for noted scholars and prominent business leaders to speak on a wide variety of topics at the intersection of private enterprise, law and the humanities. The lectures, produced in collaboration with the Stu Clark Centre for Entrepreneurship at the Asper School of Business showcases the power of multidisciplinary approaches to understanding businesses.

The Faculty of Law and The Asper School of Business presents: A joint collaboration between The Marcel A. Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and Law and The Stu Clark Centre for Entrepreneurship Family Business – The Next Generation Takes Flight When subsequent generations of highly successful entrepreneurs start their own businesses, the intergenerational knowledge they bring with them can greatly assist them as they grow and build their new business – particularly when that business is highly specialized and operates within a highly regulated environment. The family-owned business is a very large part of the Manitoba economy and for the most part, is a very successful framework for business.

presents “Family Firm to Managerial Enterprise: Three Generations of Labatt’s and the Bootlegging Manager-Entrepreneur who saved the Brewery from Prohibition.”

The lecture considered the nature of family relationships at Labatt’s. Did the family business experience a Buddenbrooks effect? How did the entrepreneurial skills of one generation of Labatts compare to those of another, and those of Edmund Burke, the general manager of the brewery during prohibition? What values did the founder of the company, John Kinder Labatt, establish to guide the business over time? Were these values dangerous path dependents that trapped his heirs in the cage of tradition? How did the brewery survive prohibition?

The Distinguished Visitors Lecture Series and the Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law presented the Rod Senft Lecture in Family Business Law, featuring Harvey Secter, O.M. on Tuesday, November 2. Mr. Secter’s talk focussed on “Successful family businesses build strong economies and healthy communities: The advisor’s role in perpetuating the virtuous circle.”

This webinar/lecture explores two cases – Silpit Industries and Sparco Holdings – decided in the Manitoba courts that provide some insight on what can happen, and how to try and avoid the risks associated with family owned enterprises.
